Child Rights and Architecture

Codesign Research Studio has entered a new three year cycle. Until 2020 the overall theme will be ”The Spatial Rights of the Child”. This expression is to be investigated and defined. The end of this cycle coincides with the proposed incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as a Swedish law. CoRS will therefore examine the relationship between child rights and architecture and investigate how our field is adapting to this transition.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international binding document containing 54 articles and 3 optional protocols that acknowledges the extended rights of children, meaning all individuals between 0-18 years old. The Swedish government ratified this document in 1990. The proposed incorporation as a law by 2020 is a part of a long process to continually strengthen the rights of the child in Sweden.
